Islamabad, 29 Jan. (AKI) - Pakistani authorities have identified the suicide bomber allegedly behind the death of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi, near the capital Islamabad, on December 27.

According to police sources quoted in Kuwaiti news agency KUNA, the man took action after a second person had opened fire on the vehicle in which Bhutto was travelling.

Police said his name was Bilal and he reportedly came from the tribal areas of Waziristan.

They were reported to have identified the suicide bomber through the testimony of a 15-year-old boy, Ittizaz Shah, who knew him and helped police.

According to the ministry of interior in Islamabad, the boy not only helped officials identify the suicide bomber but also to arrest a man called Shir Zaman, who was believed to have been involved in the assassination.

Investigators are reported to have gone to Waziristan, in the north of Pakistan, to interview Bilal's family to obtain as much information as possible about who was behind the fatal attack.

Bhutto was killed in a suicide attack at Rawalpindi on December 27 after attending a political rally.
