Cody Gakpo, a Dutch forward, stated on Sunday in Qatar that he was pleased by transfer rumours connecting him to a move to Manchester United but that the World Cup is his main priority.

The Dutch have so far been led by Gakpo, who has scored in both of their first two Group A games.

Erik ten Hag, the Dutch manager of United, is said to have pursued the 23-year-old PSV Eindhoven star throughout the season before the Red Devils chose to sign Brazilian Antony from Ajax.

However, according to press reports, United will reapply for Gakpo in January.

“I’m currently concentrating on the World Cup. It’s always nice to hear such rumours, but all I can do is concentrate here and do my best “he stated.

Gakpo has made an incredible start to the season with PSV and leads all scorers in the Dutch league with nine goals. In addition, he has handed out a league-high 12 assists.

He gave the Netherlands the lead in their 1-1 draw with Ecuador and the first goal in their 2-0 victory against Senegal.

“I’m not astonished by what I’m capable of, but (…) I think there are many areas in which I can improve,” he continued.

The Netherlands take against the already eliminated hosts Qatar on Tuesday, and a win would guarantee them a spot in the round of 16.
