From inside the Khamis Mushait orphanage came a video in which several uniformed and official employees of the orphanage could be witnessed chasing after women inside the institution, dragging several women into the courtyard. These women were then cuffed and beaten by various men with belts.

The incident is a result of the women residents of the institution who complained to the authorities about the conditions of the orphanage and after which they decided to protest. But the protest did not end well. The hunger strike was forcefully ran-over by the authorities who used unwonted methods to resolve the matter.

But it only seems to have intensified the situation. Human rights organizations all over the globe are reprimanding the Saudi government for its unorthodox problem solving modus operandi.

The video proved to be a great blow at Saudi ruler Muhammad Bin Salman’s efforts to show Saudi Arabia to be a progressive state and raises much questions about safety and freedom of speech of women in the oil-rich country.
