As stated in the notification, in addition to his responsibilities as minister of economic affairs, Sadiq has now been given the portfolio of Law and Justice.

Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar left his role as law minister last week for “personal reasons.”

On the instructions of the federal government, Tarar had supported Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial’s nominations of junior court judges for elevation to the Supreme Court.

Tarar, according to a lawyer close to him, chose to present his resignation since he did not agree with the government’s decision.

Tarar’s resignation was accepted by Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Ahsan Bhoon. He said that Tarar has shown party loyalty by following with the government’s instructions, but that by tendering his resignation, Tarar showed his support for the bar.

On the other hand, certain prominent circles were outraged by the anti-army sloganeering that happened in his presence during the Asma Jahangir Conference. In the circumstances of that episode, this resignation seems understandable.
